Perun hill: Best trails and hikes in Podstrana

One of the reasons why Podstrana is among the most desirable destinations on the Adriatic is its attractive location. It is located right next to the sea, with Perun hill in the background. Perun hill stretches from the mouth of the Žrnovnica river to the mouth of the Cetina river in Omiš.

In recent years, Perun has become a very popular picnic spot where, thanks to well-maintained trails, you can enjoy various hiking activities and routes. It has a total length of 17 kilometers, so hiking enthusiasts have plenty to see and hike. Beautifully decorated and marked trails, maintained by the Perun Mountaineering Association from Podstrana, await you.

The highest point of Perun is Križ, located at an altitude of 553 m above the village of Gornja Podstrana. The trail will reward you with stunning views of many natural, cultural, and historical attractions including prehistoric Illyrian ritual piles and four medieval chapels.

Strožanac – St. George trail

This trail is very popular and a lot of locals and tourists adore it. You can start from the western or eastern part, and there are hiking markings so you won’t get lost. This path from Strožanac leads to the small church of St. George, and the initial marking is located in front of the Tommy market (on the north side of the main intersection at the entrance to Strožanac). You will enjoy the view of Podstrana, Split, Kozjak and nearby islands. Mosor, Žrnovnica, Srinjine and Sitno Gornje greet you from the north.

St. George on Perunsko – St. George on Vršina

Don’t miss to discover this popular trail from St. George on Perunsko to St. George on Vršina (Gornja Podstrana). The walk from one church to another takes 1 hour and 15 minutes of moderate walking. The path stretches across the plateau at the top of Perun. You will be amazed by the view of the sea, islands and neighboring hills. From Vršina, you can go down the serpentine road to Gornja Podstrana, which will take you about 15 minutes. If you want, you can continue to Pišćenica, where you will reach after a 40-minute walk along the marked hiking trail. After Pišćenica, you can continue along the path towards Gornje Jesenice, from where a marked trail continues towards Omiš.

Vilar Canyon – Church of St George on Perunsko

This is a favorite trail for many visitors. The starting point, marked with a metal signpost, is next to the asphalt road, halfway between Žrnovnica and Srinjine. It takes around 1 and half hours walking from the starting point to St George on Perunsko. A 20-minute easy walk awaits you once you climb the plateau, except right next to Perunsko peak, at 441 meters above sea level. Enjoy in stunning panoramic view!

Mura (Mutogras – Gornja Podstrana)

The first marking is located at the entrance to Murska Street, opposite the playground and parking in Mutogras. For the first ten minutes, you will walk along an asphalted section, after which a narrow hiking trail begins, following which you will reach the source of the Mura in about 20 minutes. It will take another 20 minutes to walk from the source to the center of Gornja Podstrana. On the trail from the source to Gornja Podstrana, you will come across an intersection from where you can continue towards Gornji Jesenice, Gornji Duće, and Omiš.

Trans Perun trail

For those fans of more challenging hikes, there is this 20-kilometer-long trail Trans Perun. Trans Perun will take you from Podstrana to Omiš. The first marking, if you are starting from Strožanac, is in front of the Tommy grocery store. The second section takes you to St George on Vršina above Gornja Podstrana. Then you can go to Pišćenica and other points that lead the way to the final goal. Enjoy the peace, vegetation, and scenery that surrounds you.

Diocletian’s path
The Diocletian’s Path is a part of the historical ancient trail that connected the Salonitan estates of Libovac (below the village of Kučine), Gračić in Žrnovnica and Lišnjak in Srinjine, and further east. This 5-kilometre long trail starts at the church in Žrnovnica and ends at the church in Srinjine. The trail is well worth visiting because it takes you past numerous historical and natural sites. If you embark on your hike from Žrnovnica, the entrance to the trail is located at the beginning of Barbarićev prilaz street, south of the popular Mlin restaurant.

Via Ferrata
